Following heralded performances of Liszt's music in major music centers around the world, Steinway artist Steven Spooner has been selected as one of 68 pianists and the only American-born representative in a unique series of the complete solo piano works of Liszt to be held in the prestigious Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome of March 2011.

The KU School of Music is pleased to present to the public a new event, entitled "Opera Gala," which will feature the KU Symphony Orchestra, joined by 18 of KU's most talented singers and 90 choristers, all performing in beautiful gowns and tuxedos on the Lied Center stage. The concert will take place on November 22, 2009, at 7:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, November 24, Professor Forrest Pierce will present an evening of recent sacred art song in Swarthout Recital Hall. Sarah Tannehill, coloratura, and Michael Kirkendoll, piano, will perform Pierce's 2005 cycle "The Wild Iris," on texts of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Louise Gluck, followed by the world premiere of sections from his 2009 cycle "Need-Fire," on text of Becky Gould Gibson.

Mark Ferrell, musical director of KU Opera, will conduct Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City November 6, 8, 11, 14-15. Several KU voice students as well as KU Lyric Opera apprentices are in the production.

The KU School of Music is pleased to present the 85th annual Holiday Vespers concert at the Lied Center of Kansas on Sunday, December 6, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this concert can be purchased through the Lied Center Box Office, 785-864-2787, and are $12.50/general admission and $10/students and senior citizens.

KU student Jeremy Wohletz will perform on clarinet at the Heritage Concert, an event featuring alumni from Baker University, at the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City, KS. The concert will take place on Thursday November 12th at 7:30 PM.

KU's own Kip Haaheim, associate professor of music composition, wrote the score for the movie "The Only Good Indian," directed by Kevin Wilmott and written by Thomas Carmody. This movie is currently playing at Liberty Hall, downtown Lawrence.

LAWRENCE-The University of Kansas Wind Ensemble will perform on Monday, November 9, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center of Kansas. There will also be a 7:00 p.m. "Informance" before the performance, in which the conductors will discuss the concert program with the audience.

Tami Lee Hughes, KU assistant professor of violin, will present her fall recital on Friday, November 6, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., in Swarthout Recital Hall. "Notes for Sherley" is a dedicated to Hughes' late grandmother, Sherley Jacobs. Hughes will be joined by Ellen Bottorff on piano.

Paul Laird, professor of musicology, has a review of "Devotional Music in the Iberian World, 1450-1800: The Villancico and Related Genres," edited by Tess Knighton and Alvaro Torrente (Ashgate, 2007), in the May 2009 issue of "Music & Letters," Vol. 90, No. 2. Additionally, a Broadway dictionary Laird wrote with a friend entitled "The Historical Dictionary of the Broadway Musical," was just released in paperback under a new title: William A. Everett and Paul R. Laird, "The A to Z of the Broadway Musical." Lanham, Toronto, and Plymouth, UK: The Scarecrow Press, 2009.
